A Guide to the NHS App and Proxy Access via Patient Access
đź”· Using the NHS App
The NHS App is a secure and easy way to access your NHS services online. It allows you to:
- View your medical record
- Order repeat prescriptions & track if it has been dispensed (this is pharmacy dependent)
- Book or cancel appointments
- Access online consultations and the self-referral pharmacy first service
- Access NHS 111 online
📱 How to Get Started
- Download the NHS App
Find it on the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android).
- Create an Account
You’ll need:
- A form of photo ID (e.g. passport or driving licence)
- A short facial recognition scan or video for verification
(Alternatively, ask your GP surgery for a registration code)
- Connect to Your GP Practice
Once verified, the app will link to your practice if they are NHS App-enabled.
ℹ️ Note: The NHS App currently does not support full proxy access for parents, carers or guardians. This functionality is under development.
🔶 Need Proxy Access? Use the Patient Access App Instead just for now
Until the NHS App supports proxy access, patients and carers can use Patient Access.
👥 What is Proxy Access?
Proxy access allows a trusted person—such as a parent or carer—to access another person’s GP online services. This includes:
- Booking appointments
- Ordering prescriptions
- Viewing part or all of a medical record
This is useful for:
- Parents managing children’s care
- Carers supporting patients with health needs
🛠️ How to Set It Up
- Speak to Your GP Surgery
Complete and submit our proxy access application form
- Complete the Application
- You may need to provide photo ID.
- Proof of relationship (e.g. birth certificate) may be required.
- If the patient is capable of consent, their written approval will be needed.
- Download the Patient Access App
Available from the App Store or Google Play.
- Create Your Own Account
Once proxy access is approved, you will be able to switch between your record and the person you’re supporting.
📜 Proxy Access Rules in the UK
Access to someone else’s medical record follows strict NHS guidance:
Children and Young People
- Under 11 years – Parents/guardians are usually granted full access.
- 11–15 years – GPs assess if the child understands their rights. Proxy access may be limited or withdrawn.
- 16 years and over – Proxy access is only allowed with the young person’s explicit consent.
Carers and Legal Representatives
- Formal carers may be granted access with appropriate documentation (e.g. power of attorney, court order).
- The level of access will depend on the individual’s capacity and consent.
